“The Whale’s Tale, (and other Fishy Folklore,)” showcases constellations of
the autumn evening sky. Written by Hallstrom Planetarium Director Jon
U. Bell, this 34 minute presentation is in the family dialogue style of his
earlier, “Bear Tales and Other Grizzly Stories,” which featured a
grandfather and his family sharing myths and tall tales about springtime
constellations on a camping trip. This time around, the family is back
at home raking leaves in the late afternoon, and it’s Grandma who’s all set
to tell the children about Pegasus, Andromeda, Perseus, Cassiopeia, and of
course, the great sea monster, Cetus the Whale. It’s a special night
as they watch the full moon rise, learn some interesting facts about the
moon and the impending lunar eclipse that evening, and a lot more about
whales and dolphins too! As in Bear Tales, there’s also a bit of
family folk singing, and of course, all those terrible (wonderful?) puns
that punctuate many of Bell’s shows.
